European Medals from 1513 to 1788

Netherlands, The Dutch Republic. Medal (Silver, 42mm, 29.51 g 12), on hopes for the New Year of 1749, on the Peace of Aachen, the 100th anniversary of the Treaty of Münster, and Independence of the Netherlands, by M. Holtzhey, 1749. IN BATAVISQVE SIMVL SPES TEMPORIS ALMA FELICIS (=and among the Dutch there are joyous hopes for a happy future) Spes, her head in rays, standing left, raising an olive twig in her right hand; below, on scroll, MDCCXLIX. Rev. E SVPERIS ASTRÆA REDVX BONA SÆCVLA REDDENS (=from the heavens Astraia returns bringing good times) Astraia, reclining in clouds to right, holding cornucopiae, balance and olive branch; below, Spes sacrificing to left on altar; to left, at the base of the altar, the Dutch lion, seated facing and holding a sword, the bundle of arrows and a lance topped with a liberty cap; to left of the lion, book marked RE/LI:/GIO; in exergue, PAX AQVISGRANI SANCITA / ANNO LIB. IVBILÆO / MDCCXLVIII (=the Peace of Aachen signed in the year of the independence jubilee). Deth./Ord. 285. TMNK 01966 (obverse) and 011976-7 (reverse). Scarce. Very attractively toned. Good extremely fine.
