Netherlands, The Dutch Republic. Overijssel. Medal of 1 1/2 Talers (Silver, 54mm, 42.8 g 12), on the freeing of Overijssel from Spanish domination, 1597. ORDINVM*TRANSISSVLANIÆ* INSIGNIA (=arms of the States of Overijssel) At top center, shield bearing the arms of Overijssel linked by bands to the arms of Deventer, Campen and Zwolle; around, shields bearing the arms of the seventeen members of the Council of Overijssel. Rev. *LIBERTATEMxNEMOxBONVSxNISIxCVMxANIMAxSIMVLxAMISIT (=No good man ever lost his liberty except with his life) Prince Maurice, in full armor, on horseback galloping to right; behind, city view. Bratring 1438. MI I,p. 172, 166. Van Loon I, pp. 482-483, iii. Rare as a 1½ Taler medal. Beautifully toned. Traces of very old laquer in some of the devices, otherwise, good extremely fine.
