GREEK COINS
CILICIA
Uncertain. Circa 350 BC. Obol (Silver, 12mm, 0.81 g 10). Head of a gorgon facing, encircled by taenia tied at the bottom and with two loops at the top. Rev. Youthful male bust facing, turned slightly to the left, with slight drapery along the neck truncation and wearing a satrapal bonnet with a wide flap falling down behind his head. Very probably unpublished. Goktürk -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Levante -. SNG Paris -. SNG von Aulock -. Traité -. Very rare. Both fascinating and attractive. Toned, and with uncleaned deposits as found. Nearly extremely fine.
This must be one of those uncertain issues from Cilicia, produced to pay the daily wages of the satrapal forces. It is most unlikely to be from further south or from Cyprus, where similar fractions were produced: stylistically the thin flan and the careful engraving found with this coin looks different from those.
