Ottoman Empire. Mahmud II, AH 1223-1255 / AD 1808-1839. Weight of 5 dirhems (Bronze, 17x16x7mm, 15.54 g), an octangular commercial-weight. Tuðra of Mahmud II, dated 1223. Rev. Plain. Kürkman cf. 221-225 (10 Dirhems) and p. 88, middle. Clear and with an olive-green/grey patina. Very fine.

Mahmud II was one of the great sultans of Ottoman history, famous for his reforms, including his destruction of the Janissaries in 1826 and the epoch-making Tanzimat (=reorganization) of 1839, which was responsible for the modernization and secularization of the Empire.
