Netherlands, The Dutch Republic. Plaquettepenning (Silver, 79mm, 91.04 g 12), on Hendrik van Brederode and the petition for relief delivered by the nobles to Margaret of Parma on 5 April 1566, by an unknown artist in the circle of P. van Abeele, c. 1654-1658, the third quarter of the 17th century, or as late as c. 1700. HENRIC XXI BREDEROD. DOMINUS. NAT. 1531. OB. 1568. Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Brederode facing, turned slightly to right and wearing a ruff. Rev. QUI. VULT. AMARI. LANGUIDA. REGNET. MANU. / CCCC NOB. SUPPLICES - MDLXVI- D. 5 APRIL (=he that will be beloved let him rule with a courteous hand - 400 noble petitioners 5 April 1566) Scene of Hendrik van Brederode handing Margaret of Parma the petition from 400 nobles. TMNK 00180. Van Loon I, p. 79. Very rare. An impressive medal in high relief. Bright, and with lightly polished fields, done long ago, otherwise, extremely fine.

This medal is part of a series, possibly done as early as 1650-1654 by P. van Abeele or members of his circle, which commemorated the events that led up to the start of the Dutch Revolt.
