European Medals from 1513 to 1788

Netherlands, The Dutch Republic. Rotterdam. Jeton (Silver, 32mm, 12.19 g 12), on the festivities held in Rotterdam for the coronation of William and Mary, Dordrecht, mintmaster M. Sonnemaens, 1689. Crowned shield bearing the arms of Rotterdam, hanging from palm tree and supported by two opposed heraldric lions; below, band inscribed ROTERODAMUM; behind, view of the city and harbor of Rotterdam. Rev. Scene of the celebratory banquet, which was held in a square dominated by a statue of Erasmus and a specially erected arch, inscribed PRINCIPI PATRIÆ QVE S C and bearing a portrait of William III; in exergue, 1689. MI I, pp. 678-679, 55. TMNK 05469. Van Loon III, p. 391. Attractively toned. Some striking flatness on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

All the people present at the banquet, held on 11 April to celebrate William and Mary's coronation, received one of these jetons, or medalets, as a memento of the event.
