European Medals from 1513 to 1788

Great Britain. Anne, 1702-1707-1714. Medal (Silver, 43mm, 37.35 g 12), on the forcing of the French lines in Flanders and Brabant by the Duke of Marlborough, by J. Boskam, 1705. ANNA. D.G.MAG.BR.FR.ET.HIB.REGINA Draped bust of Anne to left, her hair bound with a ribbon; below, I.BOSKAM.F. Rev. FORTES. FORTVNA.IVVAT // FOSSIS.FALLISQ.HOST. / SVPERATIS. IN.BR.ET.FL. / CIƒIƒCCV Marlborough, on horse prancing to left, before scene of the attack on the French defense lines; in the background, the city of Namur. MI II, p. 275, 79. Van Loon V, p. 17. Rare. A very attractive, detailed and beautifully toned example. A few very minor marks, otherwise, virtually as struck.

The French had erected fortification lines from Namur to Antwerp, which had taken three years to construct and were reputed to be nearly impregnable. Marlborough easily broke through them and forced the French to retreat; however, disputes with his allies did not allow him to profit more from his victory.
