European Medals from 1513 to 1788

Germany. Medal (Silver, 43mm, 29.16 g 12), on the capture of Douai by the Allies in 1710, unsigned, but by Martin Brunner, 1710. DEFECTVM LVMINE VIDIT (=her view has lost its light) View of the Earth eclipsing the light of the (French) sun; all surrounded by clouds. Rev. SPES PERDENS (=hope lost) A Frenchman, on the right, playing dice with a soldier of the Allies: the Frenchman hands his opponent a coin labeled DO/VAY, who already has won coins labeled MO/NS, RU/SEL and DOR/NIC, while the Frenchman still only has coins labeled AR/RAS and PA/RIS; in exergue, DVACVM GALLIS PACEM / SPERN.EREPTVM. / MDCCX. (=Douai taken from the French, who rejected peace). EiN 171 (AE). Forrer I, p. 301. Julius 725. Montenuovo 1318. Van Loon V, pp. 165-166, ii. Rare. Very attractively toned and lustrous.
