The Three Tuns, one of the oldest and most celebrated taverns in Pepys' day, was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. General Monk (later the Duke of Albermarle) lodged there early in 1660, precipitating the accommodation between the City and the Army which led to the restoration of the monarchy
