BOMBAY PRESIDENCY: pattern AE pice (14.43g), [Bombay], 1788, Stv-2.123, KM-191. Prid-117, small date, uniface, environmental damage, NGC graded About Unc details, RRR, ex Paul Stevens Collection, ex Wheeler. Pridmore quotes a request from Tellicherry to the Bombay mint, dated 3 April 1788: "There being a great Scarcity of Pice in our Buzar We are to request your Honor &c will furnish us with that Coin to the Amount of ten thousand Rupees in the first Consignment of Treasure you shall be pleased to make us." At the 1773 rate of 100 pice to one rupee, that would mean 1,000,000 pieces, but the extreme rarity suggests that only a few trial pieces or patterns were actually produced, and that for some unknown reason the full production was refused. Furthermore, worn or damaged pieces from circulation seem to be unknown.

Estimate: 750-850 GBP
