BACTRIA: Eucratides I, ca. 170-145 BC, AR tetradrachm (16.89g), Bop-6F, helmeted bust // dioscuri on horseback, holding lances, galloping right, bold strike, truly gorgeous, NGC graded Mint State. Also known as Eucratides the Great, Eucratides I was a descendent of one of Alexander the Great's dignitaries, and was one of the more notable Greco-Bactrian kings. He ended the Euthydemid Dynasty and began one of his own. He eventually gained territory as far as the Indus River in his battles with the Indo-Greek kings, but was finally defeated and pushed back to Bactria. His numismatic output was quite prolific, indicating an important ruler. It was documented that he was assassinated by one of his sons.
