VOLGA BULGAR: Yaltavar, ca. 920s, AR dirham (2.41g), A-N1481, Zeno-69240 (this piece), blundered mint & date, as is normal for this type, pierced, VF, RR, ex Dmitry Markov Mail Bid Auction 6 (December 1998), Lot 232. The name Yaltavar was formerly interpreted as Barman, but was corrected by Rispling during his research on dirham hoards from Sweden. His coins imitate issues of the Samanid ruler Nasr b. Ahmad and usually cite the Abbasid caliph al-Muqtadir, often misspelled.
