BARODA: Sayaji Rao III, 1875-1938, AV mohur, VS1959 (1902), Y-39, NGC graded MS63. The Gaekwad Dynasty ruled Baroda from the early 18th century through 1947. Together with some Maratha chieftains, the Gaekwads fought the British in the First Anglo-Maratha War. The Gaekwads signed a treaty with the British in 1802 that recognized their indepencence from the Marathas and guaranteed autonomy for Baroda in exchange for recognizing British suzerainty. Sayaji Rao III, who began his reign in 1875, did much to modernize Baroda, including major advances in the schools and libraries of the State.
