COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, BRITISH HISTORICAL MEDALS, Cambridge University, William Browne Prize for Classical Odes and Epigrams, Gold Medal, by Lewis Pingo, first struck 1755, awarded 1904 to John Fraser, bust of William Browne left, rev kneeling figure receives wreath from a seated Apollo, named on edge, 36.5mm, 24.06g (BHM 92; Eimer 711; Eimer, Pingo 52; Storer 500). A little scuffed, nearly extremely fine.
Sir William Browne (1692-1774), elected president of the Royal College of Physicians, 1765. John Fraser (1882-1945) was Jesus Professor of Celtic (1921) at Oxford. He won the medal when a student at Trinity College, Cambridge, and is understood to have worked at Bletchley Park during the war.
