COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS BY SUBJECT, Exploration, Norway, Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), Polar Explorer, uniface thin Silver Shield or Badge, signed AM monogram and N M, medallic bust left, vignettes of polar bears and penguins divided by a scrolled band with engraved name, "B Slettebakken", 68.5mm x 57mm, stamped 830 S. Pinhole at base, very fine, rare.
Believed produced as a memorial in 1928, after Amundsen's plane went missing in the Arctic when searching for the crew of the airship Italia. Another example, named to Per Berge, was sold in Baldwin's Auction 74, 9 May 2012 (lot 2129).
