According to Gadoury (cf. Tunisie, #79), coins with dates issued in low mintages were given to the Bey on New Year's Day, who, in turn, gave them to high-ranking visitors as a gift (monnaie d'hommage). Rounding off the final number of coins minted to a number ending in 3" – or a multiple of 3 – was done in the belief that the gesture would bring good fortune to the giver as well as the receiver. Nonetheless, there were a few exceptions to this rule, cf. Lots # 312-318.
