After becoming Bey on June 19, 1942ce, Monsif attempted to free Tunis from French control and establish an independent government. For that reason, he immediately became popular among his own people. But on the basis of a false accusation that he was collaborating with the Vichy-Regime, Monsif was deposed by the French on May 14, 1943ce. He formally abdicated on July 6, 1943ce.
