India, East India Company, Bengal Presidency, in the name of Shah 'Alam II (1790 / 92 issue), Rupee, Murshidabad, AH 1202, ry.19, wide rims, edge oblique milled right, struck in Calcutta, (Stevens 4.9; Pr. 153; KM. 106), attractive dark toning, about extremely fine, rare.
Pridmore attributed this early type trials that took place in 1790. Stevens, however, favours the year 1792 as a trial of laminating and cutting machinery took place at the Calcutta mint and it is recorded that approximately 1000 Rupees on larger flans were struck at that time.
