BRITISH 18TH CENTURY TOKENS, ENGLAND, Peter Kempson, (1755-1824), buttonmaker, later token manufacturer, St Mary's Row, Birmingham, later Little Charles Street, Copper Penny, obv a gateway, BISHOPSGATE AS REBUILT 1729 around, TAKEN DOWN 1766 in exergue, rev Justice standing holding pair of scales and a sword, BRITISH . PENNY . TOKEN 1797 around, edge plain (Conder p.73, 46; Atkins p.76, 65; D&H Middlesex 75). Insignificant blemishes, otherwise essentially as made and retaining near full original colour, scarce.

Kempson was actively involved in the production of tokens from 1791 until 1799, turning out more than 60 tons of "legitimate provincial coins" for various commissions. Kempson also freely muled dies in his possession, and produced a variety of tokens for sale to collectors.
