EARL HOWE, large bust and legend, rev ship under sail to left, FARTHING below, GLORIOUS 1ST OF IUNE, 1794 FARTHING, edge plain (2) (Conder p.249, 38; Atkins p.381, 207; D&H Hampshire 101); obv small bust and legend (3), rev ship under sail to left, legend in a straight line, small annulet before date (2), edge milled (Conder p.249, 39; Virt p.148; Atkins p.381, 208; D&H Hampshire 102); edge plain (Atkins p.381, 208a; D&H Hampshire 102a); rev no line under FARTHING and no annulet after date, edge plain (Atkins p.381, 209; D&H Hampshire 103); obv ADMIL. EARL HOWE, large bust and legend (2), rev naval crown, PROMISSORY NAVAL FARTHING *, edge plain (Conder p.249, 40; Atkins p.381, 210; D&H Hampshire 104); rev Britannia seated, 1777, edge plain (D&H Hampshire 105); obv bust right, ADML. SR. JNO. JERVIS, rev MAY A FLOWING TRADE FOLLOW A SPEEDY AND HONORABLE PEACE 1796, edge plain (Conder p.249, 47; Atkins p.381, 216; D&H Hampshire 111). D&H 101 medal and coin die axis, D&H 105 weakly struck as usual, very fine for issue, the others generally extremely fine or better, D&H 103 and 105 rare. (8)

D&H states that the reverse of Hampshire 104 is the same as that used on Hampshire 97. It is not, they are two different dies. The one used on 104 a copy of the former and they can readily be distinguished by the position of the inscription relative to the wreath.
A good many of the imitation tokens and mules listed can likely be traced to the shop of William Lutwyche. However, at this point it is purely conjecture so, for the time being, they remain listed as having uncertain origin.

Estimate: £150-200
