BRITISH 18TH CENTURY TOKENS, WALES, Parys Mine Company,Thomas Williams, (1737-1802), attorney and businessman, part owner and managing partner of the Parys and Mona Mine Companies of Anglesey, Copper Penny (7), 1787, all edge ON DEMAND IN LONDON LIVERPOOL OR ANGLESEY, obv Druid's head left within thick oak wreath, four inner leaves over head between acorns, no acorn at point of hood, rev P M Co cypher, 1787, WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE PENNY, straight 1 and curved 7, 1 under foot of Y of PENNY (D&H Anglesey 32); obv acorn at end and outside of wreath above the head, rev 1 just to left foot of Y of PENNY (D&H Anglesey 34bis); obv five inner leaves over head between the acorns, no acorn at the point of the hood, rev 1 aligns under first limb of second N of PENNY (Atkins p.265, 26; D&H Anglesey 36); obv four acorns outside of wreath over head, rev 1 to left of Y of PENNY (Atkins p.265, 28; D&H Anglesey 39); obv acorn inside and outside of wreath in line with mouth, rev 1 under first limb of second N of PENNY (Atkins p.265, 27; D&H Anglesey 40); obv two inner leaves over head between acorns, acorn in centre of the wreath, acorn at point of hood (2), rev 7 under W of WE (Atkins p.266, 30; D&H Anglesey 41); rev lower flourish ends over second limb of H of THE (Atkins p.266, 31; D&H Anglesey 42). D&H 32 from fractured dies, scattered light marks and a little verdigris, otherwise extremely fine and very rare, D&H 34bis from fractured reverse die, numerous rim bruises and considerable wear, D&H 36 from a lightly rusted obverse die, light marks and a little detritus, otherwise extremely fine, D&H 39 nearly very fine, D&H 40 from the flawed obverse die, small patch of light corrosion and minor scrapes, otherwise good extremely fine with a fair amount of faded colour remaining, very rare, D&H 41 with a touch of old lacquer, good extremely fine with faded colour remaining, D&H 42 good extremely fine with faded colour, D&H 34bis and 39 extremely rare. Williams effectively gained control of the entire operations of the Parys Mountain and, later, the Cornish Metal Company, giving him a near monopoly over the development and production of copper and the copper trade in Great Britain.
