BRITISH 18TH CENTURY TOKENS, WALES, Parys Mine Company,Thomas Williams, (1737-1802), attorney and businessman, part owner and managing partner of the Parys and Mona Mine Companies of Anglesey, Copper Penny (4), 1788, all edge ON DEMAND IN LONDON LIVERPOOL OR ANGLESEY, obv Druid's head left within thin oak wreath and outer border of acorns, twenty-five acorns in wreath, last leaf stem on left has a short straight stem, four acorns at tie, rev P M Co cypher, 1788, WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE PENNY within a border of acorns, curved 1 and straight 7, 1 under second limb of second N of PENNY (D&H Anglesey 177); obv last leaf stem on left has a very short straight stem, rev 1 just to right of first limb of second N of PENNY (D&H Anglesey 178); obv spur on last leaf stem to left, spur on inside leaf stem to left at point of the beard, rev 1 under second limb of second N of PENNY (Atkins p.270, 94; D&H Anglesey 180); obv spur on last leaf stem to left, rev 1 just to right of second limb of second N of PENNY (D&H Anglesey 186). D&H 177 with area of light corrosion on the reverse, otherwise nearly good extremely fine with a little faded colour remaining, D&H 178 with a couple of edge bruises and scattered marks, otherwise very fine, D&H 180 with a few marks, otherwise extremely fine, D&H 186 good extremely fine, D&H 178 rare, D&H 180 and 186 very rare, D&H 177 exceedingly rare. Williams effectively gained control of the entire operations of the Parys Mountain and, later, the Cornish Metal Company, giving him a near monopoly over the development and production of copper and the copper trade in Great Britain.
