BRITISH 18TH CENTURY TOKENS, WALES, Parys Mine Company,Thomas Williams, (1737-1802), attorney and businessman, part owner and managing partner of the Parys and Mona Mine Companies of Anglesey, Copper Penny (3), 1788, all edge ON DEMAND IN LONDON LIVERPOOL OR ANGLESEY, obv Druid's head left within thin oak wreath and outer border of acorns, twenty-four acorns in wreath, long stem on last leaf to left, acorn level with point of hood, four acorns at tie, rev P M Co cypher, 1788, WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE PENNY within a border of acorns, curved 1 and straight 7, 1 under second limb of second N of PENNY, second 8 under WE (D&H Anglesey 210); obv double acorns on left nearly level with point of hood, rev second 8 under second downstroke of W of WE (D&H Anglesey 212); obv double acorns on left nearly level with mid point of beard, rev second 8 under first downstroke of W of WE (Atkins p.271, 97; D&H Anglesey 213). D&H 210 with surface marks and a little verdigris, otherwise very good, D&H 212 with a few light marks, otherwise good extremely fine, D&H 213 good extremely fine with faded colour remaining, D&H 212 and 213 rare, D&H 210 exceedingly rare. Williams effectively gained control of the entire operations of the Parys Mountain and, later, the Cornish Metal Company, giving him a near monopoly over the development and production of copper and the copper trade in Great Britain.
