BRITISH 18TH CENTURY TOKENS, WALES, Parys Mine Company,Thomas Williams, (1737-1802), attorney and businessman, part owner and managing partner of the Parys and Mona Mine Companies of Anglesey, Copper Penny (2), 1788, both edge ON DEMAND IN LONDON LIVERPOOL OR ANGLESEY, obv Druid's head left within thin oak wreath and outer border of acorns, twenty-three acorns in wreath, no stem on last leaf to left, acorn to point of hood, four acorns at tie, rev P M Co cypher, 1788, WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE PENNY within a border of acorns, straight 1 and 7, 1 under second limb of second N of PENNY, second 8 under second downstroke of W of WE (Atkins p.271, 109; D&H Anglesey 241); obv short stem on last leaf to left, rev 1 between N and Y of PENNY (Atkins p.271, 110; D&H Anglesey 242). First with edge bruise and a few rough patches, otherwise extremely fine and rare, second with minor marks and small spot of verdigris, otherwise better than extremely fine. (2)

Williams effectively gained control of the entire operations of the Parys Mountain and, later, the Cornish Metal Company, giving him a near monopoly over the development and production of copper and the copper trade in Great Britain.
