BRITISH 18TH CENTURY TOKENS, WALES, Parys Mine Company,Thomas Williams, (1737-1802), attorney and businessman, part owner and managing partner of the Parys and Mona Mine Companies of Anglesey, Copper Penny, 1790, obv Druid's head left within thin oak wreath and outer border of acorns, twenty acorns in wreath, ten to left and ten to right, single acorns in wreath, acorn at point of hood, W on truncation, two acorns at tie, above the ribbon, rev P M Co cypher, 1790, ANGLESEY * MINES * PENNY around within a border of acorns, long-topped P of PMCo terminates just to right of first ascending stroke of M, large letters, stars and date, edge PAYABLE IN ANGLESEY OR LONDON not in collar (Conder p.3, 17; Pye p.2, 4; Virt p.122; Atkins p.273, 118; D&H Anglesey 252). Obverse scrape, otherwise good extremely fine and very rare.

Williams effectively gained control of the entire operations of the Parys Mountain and, later, the Cornish Metal Company, giving him a near monopoly over the development and production of copper and the copper trade in Great Britain.
