BRITISH 18TH CENTURY TOKENS, WALES, Parys Mine Company,Thomas Williams, (1737-1802), attorney and businessman, part owner and managing partner of the Parys and Mona Mine Companies of Anglesey, Copper Halfpenny (4), 1789, all edge PAYABLE IN ANGLESEY LONDON OR LIVERPOOL, obv Druid's head left within thin oak wreath, twenty-four acorns in wreath, leaf stems long and with minor protuberances, left leaf stem has three small spurs, first pair of acorns to right are close to leaf, four acorns at tie, rev P M Co cypher, 1789, THE ANGLESEY MINES HALFPENNY, 1 points just to left of first limb of second N of HALFPENNY, 9 under T and H of THE, apex of second ascender of M of PMCo points just to foot of 9 of date, upright acorn as stop (Atkins p.280, 192; D&H Anglesey 366); obv first pair of acorns to right are close to the tie (2), rev 1 points between N and Y of HALFPENNY, 9 under T of THE (D&H Anglesey 367); rev o of Co points to first limb of N of ANGLESEY (D&H Anglesey 368); rev apex of first ascender of M of PMCo points to left of 8 (Atkins p.280, 193; D&H Anglesey 369). D&H 366 good extremely fine, D&H 367 with a couple of rim nicks and scattered marks, otherwise very fine, D&H 368 with rim bruises and scattered marks, otherwise better than very fine, D&H 369 with light marks and the remains of red casting wax, better than very fine and scarce, others exceedingly rare, D&H 366 untraced by D&H. Williams effectively gained control of the entire operations of the Parys Mountain and, later, the Cornish Metal Company, giving him a near monopoly over the development and production of copper and the copper trade in Great Britain.
