The Associated Irish Mine Company was formed in 1787 to mine copper in the region. There were nine original founders, including William Roe of Macclesfield. One of the company operations was the Cronebane Mine located across the river from the copper works of Ballymurtagh which was then being developed by the partnership of Messrs Camac, Kyan and Camac.
