French East India Company, 1664-1795. Bronze medal 1784, by Dupré. Vice-Admiral Pierre André de Suffren; The Capture of Trincomalee. Obverse legend (Bust left, hair tied in ribbon) : P AND DE SUFFREN ST TROPEZ CHEV DES ORD DU ROI GR CROIX DE L'ORD DE ST JEAN DE JERUS VICE AMIRAL DE FRANCE. Reverse legend within wreath with small coat-of-arms : LE CAP PROTÉGÉ/ TRINQUEMALE PRIS/ GOUDELOUR DÉLIVRÉ/ L'INDE DÉFENDUE/ SIX COMBATS GLORIEUX/ LES ÉTATS DE PROVENCE/ ONT DÉCERNÉ/ CETTE MÉDAILLE/ MDCCLXXXIV. In 1782 de Suffren fought four battles against the British Admiral, Sir Edward Hughes. This medal commemorates this outstanding naval battle and other achievements.
