Asklepios, the divine doctor, son of Apollo and student of the Centaur Cheiron, was associated with the famous sanctuary and place of pilgrimage for the ill located just south of the city and the site of Panhellenic games called the "Asklepiaia," temple, hotel, and theatre, active at various times in antiquity. Their ruins remain a popular tourist destination today, and in fact the famous theatre of the 3rd-2nd century is perfectly preserved and still in use.
