Viking Coinages. St. Edmund Memorial. Circa 885-954. AR penny. 1.32 gm. 18 mm. Memorial coinage. Stylized A with horizontal bar across top; pellets left and right; +SC EADMVN R around / Cross patee; +OLBRAIII TIRT (Blundered, as noted in North) Adelbert. S. 960. N. 483. Near Extremely Fine; lustrous surfaces with beautiful iridescent toning. Edmund, last king of East-Anglia, was martyred by the Vikings in 869 and subsequently elevated to sainthood. Other than a single mention in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, no contemporary written record of his rule survived the Vikings. Numismatic records, the St. Edmunds coinages, give us information about his place in 9th century England. Later, during the Middle Ages when Edmund was regarded as the patron saint of England, Bury and its magnificent abbey grew wealthy. Some mediaeval manuscripts and other works of art relating to Edmund also survive.
