Anonymous. 208 BC. AR Victoriatus (18mm, 2.96 g, 3h). Mint in central Italy. Laureate head of Jupiter right / Victory standing right, crowning trophy with wreath; staff between. Crawford 106/1; Sydenham 209; RSC 24n; Type as RBW 473 (same dies). Near VF, toned, some porosity and verdigris. Extremely rare.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection, purchased from Lucernae, 2010.

Extremely rare; the relatively low-relief staff is as engraved on the die and not a weak strike or due to wear, as can be seen by comparing the similarly low relief and die-matched RBW example. The staff and pentagram series are linked by this Victoriatus denomination, one obverse die being shared between the two types, and both having associated gold 60 as pieces. [A. McCabe]
