L. Titurius L.f. Sabinus. 89 BC. Æ As (24mm, 7.16 g, 10h). Semuncial standard. Rome mint. Laureate head of bearded Janus; I (mark of value) above / Prow of galley right; L•TITVRI•LF above; Victory holding wreath and palm frond to right; [SABINVS] in exergue. Crawford 344/4d var. (see note below); Sydenham –; RBW 1310 (this coin). VF, brown surfaces, areas of flat strike, edge split.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex RBW Collection (Numismatica Ars Classica 63, 17 May 2012), lot 86.

The reverse die of this piece is the same as RRC pl.XLV, 9 = Cr.344/4d, but the type is incorrectly described in RRC as having (only) a palm branch across the prow but no figure of Victory; this specimen makes clear that the palm-branch is held by Victory before the prow. RRC 344/4d allows for either obverse 4a (with value mark) or 4b (without) for this type; this coin has an obverse value mark, but the RRC plate coin does not. Hence this is a corrected reverse description for the RRC plate coin – with the addition of Victory – combined with a different obverse type than shown on the plate coin. [A. McCabe]
