L. Rubrius Dossenus. 87 BC. Æ As (27mm, 12.57 g, 6h). Rome mint. Janiform heads of Hercules and Mercury; club to lower left, [caduceus] to lower right / Prow of galley right, protruding from behind small distyle temple [containing cylindrical altar]; DOSSE to left; [L•RVBRI] below. Crawford 348/6; Sydenham 710; Type as RBW 1327. Fine, attractive dark green patina, chipped in places, areas of flat strike. Very rare.

Crawford in RRC unhelpfully notes that there is no convincing explanation for the presence of (the janiform heads of) Hercules and Mercury on the obverse of this type. [A. McCabe]
