Sicily

Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27mm, 16.85 g 2), circa 415-405. Charioteer, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in both, driving galloping chariot to left; above, Nike flying right to crown the driver; in exergue, [grain ear]. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟ[ΣΙΩΝ] Head of Kore to right, wearing ampyx and sphendone ornamented with stars, double curved earring and necklace; around her head, four dolphins. Boston MFA 414, Rizzo pl. 47, 10 and Tudeer 63 (all from the same dies). Very rare and of magnificent style. Reverse struck somewhat off center, otherwise, nearly very fine.
