GREEK COINS
Thraco-Macedonian Region

Uncertain. Circa 480-460 BC. Trihemiobol (Silver, 9mm, 0.84 g). He-goat in the running/kneeling position to right; behind head, two pellets. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. HPM pl. III, 22. Sheedy, Non-Parian Group 3. SNG ANS 66 (Aigai). Rare. Boldly struck and attractive with fine toning. Nearly extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, acquired prior to November 2009.qqqqqqMany of the attributions for coins struck in the Thraco-Macedonian region are now in a state of flux. This coin has previously been ascribed to Aigai, and even to Paros, but that now seems unlikely. The goat was a very popular coin type among the tribal groups that controlled the silver mines in the region - it was related to Dionysiac ritual and to the silens, nymphs and satyrs that populated it. This is a particularly nice example of the type.
