GREEK COINS
Thraco-Macedonian Region

Siris, or Berge (?). Circa 525-480 BC. Stater (Silver, 20mm, 8.87 g). Ithyphallic satyr standing right, right hand grasping right wrist of nymph fleeing right, his left hand supporting her chin; three pellets around. Rev. Rough incuse square divided diagonally. AMNG III, 14, Smith Group 5 and Traité I, 1568 (all as ,Lete'). Minor flatness, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, ex SKA Monetarium FPL 54, Autumn 1990, 36.qqqqqqqqqqqqThis issue has been reattributed from Lete to Siris in the past, but Selene Psoma has recently argued in favor of an attribution to Berge (S. Psoma: The 'Lete' coinage reconsidered, in: P. G. van Alfen, Agoranomia. Studies in Money and Exchange presented to John H. Kroll, New York 2006, pp. 61-85).
