Islands off Attica
Aegina. Circa 480-457 BC. Stater (Silver, 21mm, 12.36 g). Sea turtle with line of pellets down the back of its shell. Rev. Square incuse with large skew pattern. Gulbenkian 523. Kraay/Hirmer 336. Milbank pl. I, 15. SNG Copenhagen 507. A remarkably attractive piece. Nicely centered and struck. Minor flan crack, otherwise, extremely fine.
From a Swiss collection, ex SKA Monetarium FPL 61, Spring 1994, 51.qqqqqqThe staters of Aegina were struck in enormous numbers, and were used over a very long period over much of the Mediterranean area. However, they were almost invariably struck in great haste so that the vast majority are off center in some way. This piece, so perfectly struck and centered, is unusually nice and, thus, quite rare.
