GREEK COINS
Troas
Skepsis. Mid 5th Century BC. Obol (Silver, 9mm, 0.54 g 9), Homonoia with Neandreia (?). Σ-K-H Forepart of horse to right. Rev. Grape bunch; to left, N; all within concentric incuse, dotted, and linear squares. CNG 67, 2004, 652 (same dies). BMC 4 var. and SNG München 322 var. (both Drachms and with a pine-tree instead of a grape bunch). Klein -. Rosen -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Keckman -. SNG von Aulock -. Extremely rare, possibly only the second known. Die break on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.
The authors of the BMC catalogue have suggested that the rare Skepsis Drachms with pine-tree and N-E on the reverse may represent an early alliance issue of Skepsis and Neandreia. Our coin, a type apparently unpublished save for the CNG specimen, appears to be the corresponding Obol of the issue.
