GREEK COINS
Aeolis
Gryneion. 3rd Century BC. AE (Bronze, 17mm, 3.68 g 6). Laureate head of Apollo facing slightly to left. Rev. ΓΡYNHΩN Mussel. SNG Copenhagen 202-3. SNG von Aulock 7689. Minor flan faults on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.
Curiously enough, the coinage of Gryneion always spells the Polis' name as Gyrneion. The city was best known in antiquity for its temple of Apollo that included a famous oracle: it is the Apoll of Gryneion that is shown on the reverse of the extensive issue of stephanophoric Tetradrachms from the neighbouring polis of Myrina.
