Hierapolis-Castabala. Antonine period, 138-192. Triassarion (Bronze, 27mm, 8.68 g 7). Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Alexander the Great to right. Rev. Veiled and turreted bust of Tyche to right; before, torch. RPC 4065. RPC online 5806. SNG France 2226-7. SNG Levante 1577. A lovely piece with pleasant surfaces and attractive light green patina. Very fine.
The obverse portrait is now thought to depict Alexander the Great as founder (ktistes) of Hieropolis-Castabala. During the second century it was very popular for cities to claim a foundation by Alexander in order to enhance their status.
