Coins - Ancient coins - Roman Empire
Valens, 364 – 378 AD, Solidus, Treveri (Trier), 373 - 375 AD, RIC 17e, C 38, Depeyrot 43/2, 5.08 g, in a Germanic 5th century mount. The particular design of the suspension loop and especially the triangular mounting plate resembling a bunch of grapes is typical of the Nordic A-type braceates in imitation of the Roman emperor medallions, and it would be fair to assume that the present coin has had a similar function as an amulet.
