William and Mary. 1689-1694. Copper halfpenny. 10.63 gm. 27 mm. 1694. Their conjoined busts right; GVLIELMVS• - ET• MARIA around / Britannia seated left; BRITAN - NIA • around; 1694 below. S. 3452. Peck 602. Extremely Fine; fresh surfaces with rich and even brown tone; minor flan flaws and striking weaknesses though the portraits are exceptional. (This outstanding portrait resulted from a strike that left the reverse weakly struck.). The Frank Robinson Collection. The quality of copper flans in this era was problematic in terms of how well the flan was made at the time of striking and how the surfaces aged. This is one of the most appealing examples of this issue I have seen. It is substantially better than the Newman example Heritage sold in 2014. Proof issues of William and Mary were better made and have fared better over the centuries but as a currency issue, this piece is exceptional. (AD)
