Victoria. 1837-1901. Æ token by W. J. Taylor. 8.09 gm. 28 mm. London, G. T. Dutton. 1857. Bust of Victoria left, a very close copy of the currency portrait; VICTORIA 5TH OCTOBER 1857 around; signed W.J.R. on the truncation (Hawkins notes that the significance of the date "is a mystery." / G. T. DUTTON 71 HIGH HOLBORN CR RED LION ST. around; in five lines in the center THE CELEBRATED 10s 6d OXFORD SHOE. Hawkins (A Dictionary of Makers of British metallic tickets...1788-1910) p. 755. Good Extremely Fine; handsome piece. Records show Dutton at this address from 1856-58. This piece is unusual for its quality and for the prominence of Taylor. Apparently it is also rare with only two pieces shown as having been on the market in the last 25 years.
