JUDAEA. First Revolt. 66-70 C.E. Æ prutah. 2.4 gm. 17 mm. Year 2 (67/68 C.E.). An amphora with a broad rim, two handles; border of dots; Hebrew legend ("Year 2") / A small branch with a tendril, beginning from the right, a vine leaf attached; Hebrew legend "The freedom of Zion". Meshorer 196. AJC 12. (II: Pl. 18). Hendin 1360. Very Fine; pleasing dark green patina; some minor surface erosion on reverse. An attractive example of an often irregular series. David Sear writes "Discontent with the inept rule of the Procurators eventually led to open rebellion in Judaea in A.D. 66. The Romans, distracted by the Civil Wars following the death of Nero, were unable to put a speedy end to the Revolt. But in AD 70 Titus, son of Vespasian, sacked Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple." Cf. Lot 25.
