His laureate head right; SEVERVS AVG PART MAX P M TR P VIIII / Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm frond; COS II P P. RIC IV.1 523. RSC 98. Near Extremely Fine; lightly toned; crisply struck; a few pits on reverse field. Handsome portrait. Rare. An outstanding soldier, Severus spent much of his reign on campaign across the Empire. He was married to Julia Domna with whom he had two sons, Caracalla and Geta (see lots 34-36).
