ROMAN BRITAIN. Carausius. A.D. 287-293. Æ antoninianus. 3.15 gm. 22 mm. 'C' mint. His radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right; IMP C CARAVSIVS P F AVG / Pax standing left, holding olive branch and scepter; PAX AVG around, S P flanking. RIC V.2 475. Very Fine; brown patina. Ex Victor England Auction (12 July 1979), lot 166. David Sear reports that Carausius was born in the Netherlands and is said to have been a helmsman in his youth. He commanded the Channel Fleet clearing the North Sea of pirates. He fled to Britain with his booty, where he ruled as a usurper emperor until murdered by Allectus.
