The Roman Empire
Postumus, 260 – 269
Antoninianus, Treveri 268, AR 3.02 g. POSTVMVS AVG Radiate and draped bust l., with club and lion'skin. Rev. PA – X AVG Pax standing l., holding olive-branch and sceptre. C 218. RIC 319. Elmer 564. Very rare. Old cabinet tone and a wonderful portrait, reverse slightly
off centre, otherwise good very fine
Privately purchased from Nomos.
Postumus issued very rare coins on which he picks up the attributes of Hercules that Commodus had worn shortly before his assassination. The clear propaganda message here being that Postumus expressed he was strong enough to hold back both the Germanic barbarians and his internal rivals for the throne. AMP.
