The Roman Empire
Constantine I augustus, 307 – 337

The many portrait types of Constantine I the Great across his long reign issued in multiple mints across the empire could easily fill a catalogue on their own: here are only a small selection of special types. AMP.

Heavy Miliarense, Nicomedia 324-325, AR 5.31 g. Diademed head r. Rev. CONSTANTINVS AVG Four standards; in exergue, SMN. C 106. RIC 86.
Extremely rare. A very interesting portrait and a lovely
light iridescent tone. About extremely fine
The following two coins represent the most fascinating and interesting portrait type of Constantine the Great, the highly stylised new portrait type looking up "to God". Especially a large miliarense such as this example is exceedingly rare and difficult to find. Clearly these portraits leave the tetrarchic images behind and experiment with a completely new approach to imperial portraits.
This particular miliarense has a feature which I have not found so far on other coins (but I have also not seen many such miliarense to compare it with): Constantine's hair was made to look fuller and shinier by this very artistic die maker through an ingenious idea. He added many ultrashort metal cuts against the longer waves of the hair, which reflect the light. This miliarense was exhibited at the Constantine exhibition in the Munich Coin Museum, in the catalogue Konstantin 312; 2012 coin 126 AMP.
