Solidus 355-357, AV 4.35 g. FL IVL CONST – ANTIVS P F AVG Cuirassed bust facing, wearing crested and diademed helmet, holding spear over r. shoulder and shield, decorated with star pattern. Rev. GLORIA – REI – PVBLICAE Roma and Constantinople enthroned, holding a spear and a sceptre. Between them, they hold a wreath, inscribed VOT / XXX / MVLT / XXXX. In exergue, palm RSMP palm. C 117. One of the first frontal portraits that portray the emperor with a helmet, holding a spear and a shield. This extremely influencial portrait type is to dominate the late Roman solidi issues into the early Byzantine empire. Here an issue from the mint of Rome, which had considerably lost importance in the previous decades. AMP.
