Chihli (Pei Yang Arsenal). Kuang-hsü Dollar Year 22 (1896) AU Details (Altered Surfaces) PCGS, Pei Yang Arsenal mint, L&M-439, KM-Y65, Kann-181. This extremely rare issue is sharply struck, with even lead-gray toning. The surfaces show only a few very small marks and luster is abundant beneath the toning. The appearance is quite pleasing even though this piece may have been cleaned, and re-toned in the past. Altered Surfaces seems to be an unusual designation for this coin, as the surfaces are completely free of any type of damage to the metal. All-in-all, this is a very pleasant example with nice eye-appeal. The initial issues of the Pei Yang mint were struck in 1896. During that year, they struck 5 coins, 5 Cents, 10 Cents, 20 Cents 50 Cents, and Dollar. They struck coins using the decimal system until 1899, when the mint changed to denominations in Mace and Candereens.
